Augmented Reality Mural
Overview: An augmented reality mural that produces unique visual and written responses to each person that engages with it. The murals were revealed at the 2018 Murals In The Market festival in Detroit, Michigan. Over 10 iterations of varying scale were wheat pasted in Eastern Market, the largest open air market in the US and location of the festival. The market receives over 10,000 visitors each weekend, but during the festival dates the traffic increases to an estimated 30,000 visitors.
The team 5 person team operated under the name United Labor, a collective comprised of writers, designers, developers and artists. In addition to the murals, we contributed a three print edition to 1XRUN and developed AR collateral such as t-shirts and stickers.
Leveraging QR codes as a key visual element in the design of the mural, we aimed to create a mural communication with a clear CTA for onlookers looking to engage. When onlookers would open their native camera app on an Android or IOS device and point at the mural, a browser based AR experience would be launched. When launched and animated door would roll up in place of the mural and reveal a unique result with each engagement.
